How We Need to Be Thinking About Artificial Intelligence

A critical framework for ethics, society, and human responsibility

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer speculative technology.

It is already integrated into health systems, finance, education, governance, and communication networks. Algorithms influence what news we consume, what products we buy, and how institutions allocate resources. In short: AI is now an embedded feature of human society.

Yet public conversation about AI oscillates between two poles: fear (machines as threats to humanity) and hype (machines as saviours). Neither extreme provides a productive lens. To ensure AI develops as a technology that serves the common good, we need a new framework for thinking—one that is ethically grounded, socially aware, and practically engaged.

This article outlines five dimensions that should shape how we think about AI.

1. Beyond Fear: Replacing Paralysis with Critical Engagement

Fear is often the first and most visceral response to artificial intelligence. Popular culture has fuelled much of this anxiety—films like The Terminator or Ex Machina depict AI as hostile machines destined to surpass and enslave humanity. Public surveys echo these anxieties: according to the Edelman Trust Barometer (2023), more than 60% of respondents globally reported being worried about AI threatening jobs, privacy, or even civilisation itself.

These fears are not unfounded. AI carries real risks. For example:

  • Employment disruption: Automation has already displaced workers in manufacturing and logistics, and white-collar roles (such as paralegals, accountants, or customer service agents) are now being reshaped by AI systems.
  • Bias and discrimination: Research has shown facial recognition systems perform less accurately for women and people of colour, amplifying existing inequalities (Buolamwini & Gebru, 2018).
  • Loss of privacy: AI thrives on vast datasets, raising questions about surveillance, consent, and ownership of personal information.
  • Misinformation: Generative AI makes it easier to create convincing deepfakes and false narratives, challenging trust in media and public discourse.

Given these issues, fear is an understandable reaction. However, fear by itself is not a strategy. Fear leads to disengagement: people avoid learning about AI, organisations delay adoption, and communities remove themselves from the conversation. When this happens, power consolidates in the hands of governments, multinational corporations, and technologists—actors who may not prioritise ethical or inclusive outcomes.

To simply reject AI out of fear is, in effect, to hand the future over to others.

What is needed instead is critical engagement. This means holding two realities together: acknowledging the legitimate dangers of AI, while also recognising its potential for good when carefully directed. Critical engagement calls for participation rather than withdrawal.

For example:

  • In the health sector, AI is already being used to detect cancers earlier and more accurately than traditional methods. Engaging critically means ensuring these tools are tested rigorously, deployed equitably, and not limited to wealthy populations.
  • In education, AI tutoring platforms can personalise learning for students who struggle in traditional settings. The challenge is to prevent such tools from replacing teachers entirely or embedding cultural bias.
  • In civil society, charities are using AI to analyse donor data and strengthen fundraising campaigns. Engagement means asking how to protect donor privacy and avoid over-surveillance, while still harnessing insight to drive impact.

Fear sees only risk. Hype sees only promise. Critical engagement sees both—and asks, “How do we shape AI to serve human dignity, equity, and justice?”

This shift from fear to engagement requires education, dialogue, and policy frameworks that empower citizens to question and participate in AI’s future. By resisting paralysis, society can ensure that AI development is not dictated solely by the most powerful, but influenced by a wider set of voices—including ethicists, educators, faith communities, and everyday citizens.

In short: fear is a natural response, but it cannot be our final response.

2. Beyond Hype: Recognising Both Potential and Limits

While fear dominates one end of the spectrum, hype occupies the other. AI is frequently presented by corporations and media outlets as a panacea—able to solve climate change, end poverty, revolutionise education, and streamline every human process. Investment reports frequently emphasise trillion-dollar market projections, while political rhetoric frames AI as essential for national competitiveness.

There is truth in some of this optimism. AI-driven platforms have already produced breakthroughs: AlphaFold’s protein-folding predictions (DeepMind, 2021) accelerated biomedical research; AI-enabled energy modelling is improving renewable energy grids; natural language processing has expanded global access to translation services. These are not trivial achievements—they demonstrate AI’s capacity to accelerate human innovation.

However, technological determinism—the belief that technology inevitably produces progress—ignores historical lessons. Every major technological shift has produced unintended consequences: industrialisation created pollution and labour exploitation; the internet expanded access to information but also to misinformation and online harm. AI is no different.

A sober perspective recognises AI’s limits:

  • AI is not value-neutral; it reproduces the biases present in its training data.
  • AI is not infallible; large language models often generate errors or “hallucinations.”
  • AI is not autonomous; it remains shaped by human design choices, incentives, and priorities.

By critically interrogating both the hype and the limitations, society can avoid two pitfalls: naive over-reliance and reactionary rejection. The challenge is to situate AI realistically—as powerful, but not omnipotent; useful, but not ultimate.

3. People First: AI as a Human-Centred Technology

At its core, artificial intelligence is not about code, data, or algorithms. It is about people. AI’s value—and its danger—lies in its social consequences. Yet too often the conversation is dominated by technical efficiency and economic gain, sidelining the very individuals whose lives are most directly affected.

A people-first perspective asks urgent questions:

  • Who benefits from this system?
  • Who is excluded or harmed by its design?
  • Who holds power and who bears the risk?

Without these questions, AI will not be neutral—it will deepen existing inequalities.

Consider credit scoring. Algorithmic systems can extend access to finance for individuals excluded from traditional banking. But if trained on biased historical data, they may replicate discriminatory patterns, penalising people of colour or low-income applicants (Hurley & Adebayo, 2016). Similarly, in healthcare, AI can support earlier diagnoses of disease, yet if datasets are skewed toward populations in wealthy nations, marginalised communities risk being overlooked (Obermeyer et al., 2019). These examples reveal a central truth: technical sophistication does not guarantee social justice.

A human-centred approach to AI therefore requires three principles:

  1. Equity: Systems must be designed and tested to avoid reproducing systemic bias. This means rigorous audits, diverse datasets, and accountability when harms occur.
  2. Accessibility: The benefits of AI must not be confined to the wealthy or technologically privileged. Democratizing access—through open models, affordable tools, and public infrastructure—is essential to narrowing the digital divide.
  3. Accountability: Responsibility for outcomes must remain with people, not displaced onto “the algorithm.” Decision-making systems must be explainable, transparent, and subject to human oversight.

International frameworks echo these imperatives. The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021) foregrounds human rights and dignity as non-negotiable. The European Union AI Act (2024) adopts a risk-based framework, prioritising protections where human impact is greatest. Both point to the same conclusion: AI must be judged not by what it can do, but by how it shapes human lives.

Ultimately, AI is not just a technical project—it is a moral one. To treat it otherwise risks reducing people to data points, citizens to consumers, and communities to markets. The real measure of AI’s success is not in computational benchmarks but in whether it expands the horizons of human flourishing.

4. Ethics as Design, Not Afterthought

AI raises ethical challenges at a scale and speed rarely seen in previous technologies. Among them:

  • Algorithmic bias: predictive policing systems have disproportionately targeted minority groups (Lum & Isaac, 2016).
  • Data exploitation: social media algorithms have monetised personal information in ways that blur the line between consent and surveillance.
  • Generative risks: AI-generated deepfakes threaten democratic processes and the credibility of journalism.

Too often, ethical considerations are addressed after deployment, when harms are already evident. The Cambridge Analytica scandal, for instance, revealed how data misuse could influence elections—yet only after millions had already been impacted.

The alternative is ethics by design—embedding ethical safeguards into systems from the outset. This includes:

  • Transparent datasets and audit processes.
  • “Bias bounties” (parallel to cybersecurity bug bounties) to incentivise identifying discriminatory outputs.
  • Participatory design, involving diverse communities in shaping systems that affect them.

Ethics by design requires multi-disciplinary collaboration. Engineers cannot solve these issues alone; philosophers, theologians, lawyers, sociologists, and affected communities must contribute. As Floridi and Cowls (2019) argue, the governance of AI demands a framework of principled, inclusive, and anticipatory ethics—not just reactive fixes.

In practice, this means shifting the question from “What can AI do?” to “What should AI do?”—and answering it before systems are deployed..

5. Shared Responsibility: Everyone Has a Role

Artificial intelligence is not confined to laboratories or boardrooms; it is a social technology whose influence cuts across every sector. Its applications affect employment, education, healthcare, law enforcement, fundraising, and even the ways individuals form relationships and communities. Because its impacts are so pervasive, the responsibility for shaping AI cannot be left to a single group. Instead, it must be distributed—shared among governments, corporations, civil society, faith communities, and individuals.

Governments: Regulating With Foresight

Governments hold the authority to set the legal and regulatory frameworks that determine the boundaries of AI use. However, policy too often lags behind technological development. The European Union AI Act (2024) represents a significant step forward with its risk-based regulatory model, but globally, governance remains uneven. Without coordinated regulation, AI risks becoming a tool for unchecked surveillance, disinformation, or exploitation. Governments must therefore act not merely as regulators but as stewards, protecting citizens while fostering innovation.

Corporations: Profit Versus Principle

Private companies are driving most AI innovation, motivated primarily by competition and profit. While this accelerates progress, it also creates incentives to cut corners on safety, fairness, and transparency. For example, the rush to commercialise generative AI models in 2023–2024 led to widespread deployment of systems that produced misinformation, amplified bias, and exploited creative labour without consent. Corporations cannot be the sole arbiters of AI’s direction. They must be held accountable to ethical standards that prioritise human wellbeing over short-term gains.

Civil Society: The Watchdog Role

Non-governmental organisations, advocacy groups, and grassroots movements are critical in ensuring that marginalised voices are not excluded from the AI conversation. Civil society acts as a counterbalance to state and corporate power—identifying harms, amplifying overlooked perspectives, and pressing for equitable outcomes. Initiatives that investigate algorithmic discrimination, for instance, have often come from independent researchers and advocacy groups rather than the companies building these systems.

Faith and Ethical Communities: Raising Deeper Questions

Beyond technical and legal frameworks, AI also raises questions of meaning, value, and morality. Faith-based organisations, ethicists, and philosophers contribute perspectives often absent from technological debates: What does it mean to be human in an age of machines? How do we balance efficiency with dignity? How do we resist reducing people to data or productivity? By entering the conversation, these communities can push AI governance beyond compliance toward a more holistic vision of the good.

Individuals: From Consumers to Citizens

Finally, individuals bear responsibility too—not just as consumers of AI products but as citizens whose choices shape social norms. Developing digital literacy is crucial: understanding what AI can and cannot do, questioning its outputs, and resisting uncritical reliance on automated systems. Individual engagement ensures that responsibility for AI is not abstract but lived out in everyday practice.

From Concentrated Power to Distributed Stewardship

The danger of AI is not simply that it is powerful, but that its power is concentrated—in the hands of a few corporations and governments. A shared responsibility model resists this concentration by insisting that multiple actors have both a role and a duty in shaping AI. This distributed stewardship is the only way to ensure that AI develops in ways that are accountable, just, and aligned with human flourishing.

Ultimately, AI governance must be reframed as a collective project. The future of AI will not be decided solely in Silicon Valley or Brussels. It will be shaped by the willingness of societies—at every level—to engage critically, act ethically, and demand accountability.

Conclusion: Shaping, Not Submitting

Artificial intelligence is not an autonomous destiny moving toward us; it is a mirror reflecting our own choices, values, and priorities. The systems we design will embody the assumptions we permit, the ethics we enforce, and the communities we include—or exclude. In that sense, AI is less about machines and more about ourselves.

Fear alone will paralyse us, outsourcing moral leadership to those who already hold power. Hype alone will deceive us, inflating technical capability into false promises of salvation. Both responses—fear and hype—abdicate responsibility. What is required instead is deliberate engagement: an approach that balances innovation with restraint, efficiency with equity, and progress with principle.

To think rightly about AI is to think beyond the immediate questions of profit and productivity. It is to ask deeper questions: Whose interests does this technology serve? What kind of society does it sustain? What does it mean to remain human in a machine-shaped world?

If policymakers, corporations, civil society, and ethical communities embrace shared responsibility, AI can be directed toward a genuinely human-centred future. One where technology enhances dignity rather than diminishes it, expands opportunity rather than entrenches inequality, and strengthens the social fabric rather than fragmenting it.

The future of AI will not be written in code alone. It will be written in the courage of societies willing to face its risks honestly, harness its possibilities responsibly, and insist that human flourishing—not efficiency, profit, or control—remains the highest goal.

The decisive question is not what AI will become, but rather: what kind of people will we be as we shape it?
